Oh that one's more complex. Shikamaru isn't exactly a musical person, but he's keen on patterns. There's a pause as he watches the Traveler run in circles... and then he tries to drum the tune in reverse, similar to how ti changed directions.]

[yaaaaaaaaaaaaay fun. okay.

the traveler stops and thrums out a peal of sound once before running over to Shikamaru. it looks up at him and chirps again, tilting its head.]

[endgames]

[That sounded inquisitive almost. Shikamaru drums idly, lightly now as he ponders. It's customary to introduce yourself, right? After a moment he stops drumming to point a finger at his own chest.]

Shi. Ka. Ma. Ru.

[He tries to make each syllable special as he says them, like it's own note.]

[it listens and then pips back in the same tones and rhythm.]

[it lets out the final sound as a loud soundwave, the bubble of it expanding outward]

[Whoa, was not expecting that. He jumps a little, though the startle fades to awe a moment later.

What was that? He's not sure what to think, but it was amazing.]

[it looks up at Shikamaru, tilting its head to the side slightly.]

[Shikamaru crouches down so they're at eye level, smiling.]

That was cool. Do it again?

[He cups his hands together in front of them as he says this, then makes them fly apart in mimic of the soundwave.]

[it tilts its head the other way, confused. what is this person doing??

hm.

it cocks its head back and then lets out a loud chirrup like before, jumping into the air and twisting around as it does so.]

[OH WAIT. Sound, right? He starts drumming his fingers in time with that he says. ta-ta-tata-ta]

That was really cool.

[it mimics and then turns in a circle where it is in response to the thumbs up. apparently this thumbs thing is a good sign. the traveler is rather pleased now]

[He tries to match the tonal inquisitiveness he heard before, as he points to the Traveler.]

[....? it doesn't know. the name tag fell off a long time ago and it couldn't read it anyway. also the card? not a help. it couldn't understand it either.

it tilts stops running in circles and tilts its head at Shikamaru, confused.]

[There has to be something it thinks of itself as though! Or so Shikamaru will assume, since it wanted to know what he was.

But let's try this again. Shikamaru points back at himself, drumming as before.]

Shikamaru.

[...and then pointing back at the traveler. Anything?]

[it repeats his name and looks at him again.

after a moment, it chirps again and a little symbol appears in the air and on the front of its chest for just a moment before fading.]

[Oh, that was neat. He doesn't know how to say it, but it was really neat!

There's a little bit of dirt, where a patch of grass didn't grow. Shikamaru makes a crude sketch of the symbol he saw from memory there, with his finger.]

[it reaches out with a foot and taps the symbol twice and then looks up at Shikamaru and thrums happily]

[When it 'hums' in tune with her, Raven shifts on her bird feet and lowers her head.]

I'm stuck. I don't know what to do.

[chirpchirp]

[the traveler turns a lazy circle and stops, its scarf floats behind it for a moment. it tilts its head at Raven and it chirps again, curious as to what she is]

[Is that a signal to continue?]

I'm...I'm a person. Not a bird.

[chirpchirp]

[a person? oh, a person, but she doesn't look like a person. the traveler walks forward and looks at her, walking from one side to the other to inspect her.]

♪♪ ♪♪ ♪~?

[pendantry]

[She wonders if the red creature has a name? Or maybe its name is music. Maybe it forgot who it is and how to talk.]

The card told me not to think about birds...and this happened when I did.

[chirpchirp]

[it tilts its head the other way. how strange. a person that looks like this. this is new. it moves closer, trying to get its face closer to Raven's.]

[pendantry]

[It being that close suddenly startles her, and her feathers puff out and she-

Half-squawks? It's definitely not a chirp; something between a startled squawk and a chime, though.]

[chirpchirp]

[o-oh! it jumps back and thrums, weaving a little uncertainly]

You surprised me.

...Do you have a name?

[chirpchirp]

[name? that sound, it's heard it before. yes.

but. no, it doesn't know. it weaves back and forth before chirruping again, little runes popping up by its head]

[pendantry]

[It's not a name she can pronounce. It has a nice rhythm though.]

I'm...Raven. [The card said it and no one has corrected her.] Are you a person?

[chirpchirp]

♪♩?

[it tries to mimic the sound of her voice in the limited tones it has and then turns in a circle.

what is a person?]

[pendantry]

[Oh. Those sounds...matched the way she said her name. If birds could smile, she would be.]

I don't know a word to use for you. [And she feels bad about it.]

[chirpchirp]

♪♩~ ♪♩~ ♪♩~

[it turns in a circle the other direction and then looks up at Raven, tilting its head. it doesn't mind what it is called, it just enjoys meeting people]

[The sound of it sing-songing her name that way does...something. Something that feels completely unfamiliar but okay at the same time. Raven's laughing.

After a minute it appears to trigger something else and she changes abruptly from confused orange bird to startled person.]

[chirpchirp]

[OH MY ELDERS WHAT.

the traveler jumps and runs for safety, trips on its scarf halfway to a tree and falls face first into the ground]

[pendantry]

[The laughter is kicked out and replaced with an overwhelming sense of loss and sadness.]

Wait-!

[chirpchirp]

[the traveler lies on the ground for a minute, scarf waving lazily in the air and then it slowly climbs to its feet, shaking itself off. what...happened. 8( ]

[pendantry]

I don't know...why I am this way. [Such profound sadness has stopped her cold.] I'm sorry.

[chirpchirp]

[how strange. the person doesn't seem mean though! even if...the traveler was surprised by the change.

it steps forward again and leans up, trying to reach her face. it's far too short to do that. orz]

[pendantry]

[Oh.

So Raven drops to one knee, instead. No need to make it try to stretch.]

[chirpchirp]

[it nuzzles her cheek and pips, then takes a step away]

[and now it will just turn in a circle because why not]

[It...what? Raven flushes, without knowing why, and smiles too.]

I wish I could sing with you.

[chirpchirp]

[the traveler lets out another violin-like twitter and flaps its cloak, rising into the sky for a moment.]

[pendantry]

You fly?

[chirpchirp]

[it does! but not for long.

the glow from its scarf gradually fades and it drifts back to the ground, pipping at Raven]

[pendantry]

[Don't think about flying. Remember last time?]

It must be magic.

[chirpchirp]

[it is! or something like that. after turning in a circle, the traveler pips and runs off into the distance a bit.]

You're leaving?

[She's sad again. This time she puts up a hand to wave, though.]

[chirpchirp]

[to say goodbye, it runs back and rubs up against her legs once and then spins around and runs off. we'll meet again, new person! it has to travel for a bit now, but we'll meet again!]
